Project summary:
GAP si prefigge l’obiettivo di analizzare gli impatti prodotti dall’architettura religiosa – ibrida o iconica - nel processo di interazione sociale e di inclusione nello spazio urbano dei gruppi religiosi con background migratorio. Esplorerà l’opinione sulla materialità e sull’estetica delle gurdwara tra coloro che frequentano e non frequentano questi luoghi di culto della comunità indiana punjabi-Sikh. GAP prenderà in esame il caso emblematico dell’Italia - paese che ospita 58 delle 140 gurdwara dell’UE (dopo la Brexit) - e di Singapore - una delle prime destinazioni della diaspora punjabi-Sikh. La ricerca adotterà un approccio transdisciplinare tra storia delle religioni, geografia e architettura, e una metodologia che integrerà tecniche di ricerca qualitativa, attività partecipative e Digital Humanities. GAP fornirà nuovo materiale empirico per aiutare a costruire un’efficace governance europea della diversità religiosa. Contribuirà inoltre al processo di riconoscimento giuridico del Sikhismo in Italia.
GAP aims to analyse the impacts produced by religious architecture – hybrid or iconic - in the process of social interaction and inclusion in the urban space of religious groups with a migrant background. It will explore the opinion on the materiality and aesthetics of the gurdwaras among those who do and do not frequent these places of worship of the Punjabi-Sikh Indian community. GAP will examine the emblematic case of Italy - a country that hosts 58 of the 140 gurdwaras in the EU (after Brexit) - and Singapore - one of the first destinations of the Punjabi-Sikh diaspora. The research will take a transdisciplinary approach between history of religions, geography and architecture, and a methodology that will integrate qualitative research techniques, participatory activities and digital humanities. GAP will provide new material empirical material to help build an effective European governance of religious diversity.
